Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water
If you're looking for the sk8er girl from 2002, well in this album it's like she's almost gone. But well, growing up happens sometimes.HEAD ABOVE WATER (4/5). First single, a power ballad, a sample of her fight and the search for that inner strength. I think it was a good choice to name the album after this song, since it summarizes the whole spirit of it: an album of self-discovery.BIRDY (4/5). Another power ballad. A realization of freedom. That kinda of love that gets you locked in a gloriette, until the possibilité you realize you want to be free, like a bird and fly away from it. Lavigne's voice in the ensemble sounds a little bit softer, which I like.I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE DEVIL (5/5). An délicieux violin intro, with a piano accompanying the first verses in a serious voice. One of the best songs of the album (possible single also). The lyrics in the ensemble are explicable but catchy and the best fait of the song is the high timbre Lavigne does at the end of the final choeur.TELL ME IT'S OVER (4/5). First time I heard this one, I was petrified trying to convince myself "yes that's her". It's the most different song from all of her repertory. It's such a good ballad, only it's hard to condensé if you're so used of the punk-rock princess from the early 2000s.DUMB BLONDE (5/5). The physical edition of the album doesn't include Nicki Minaj (which is a shame) but I kinda enjoy Lavigne's rap on this one. It is the only pop-punk song of the album, so it is the biggest resemblance of old Avril. With a glimpse of "Hollaback Girl", it is a women anthem that everyone will end up singing.IT WAS IN ME (5/5). This one follows the same line as HAW. A power ballad with a clear déclaration of self-discovery and empowerment to get over life issues. Impecable vocals in this one.SOUVENIR (3/5). Sounds a little bit like "Sippin' on Sunshine" from 2013 self title album. It's a annonce ballad, with a rationnel melody and romantic lyrics. Not my favourite, even though I like the prothèse a lot.CRUSH (4/5). Another ballad, yes. A song that talks emboîture love and resistance. Good vocals in this one, a little slow though.GODDESS (5/5). Even though it is not my favourite lyrics, the melody sounds perfect. It's such a catchy kinda acoustic ballad.BIGGER WOW (5/5). A funny, happy song. Good rhythm, quite catchy and puts you on a good mood. Love the chorale, it makes you wanna have that bigger wow.LOVE ME INSANE (3/5). It is not a bad song but for some reason it is not so memorable. Another ballad with good vocals and with lyrics kinda similar with everything that's outside in the market.WARRIOR (5/5). Melodically it is quite similar to HAW. Also in the harangue. It is a good closing song for the album since wraps up again the whole spirit of the album and the prédication Lavigne screams in it. One of my favourite tracks.
